Guide to Create Gemini Gems

A simple guide to create Gemini Gems, your AI Assistent that stays with you for 24/7/365.

Gemini Gems are custom AI assistants trained on your specific rules, tone, and knowledge files so you do not have to retype the same context in every prompt.

  1. Open the Gem Manager: Go to gemini.google.com on your computer browser. In the left sidebar, click Explore Gems (or Gems) to open your Gem library.
  1. Start a New Gem: Click the New Gem (or + Create New) button. This opens the builder screen with configuration fields on the left and a test preview window on the right.
  1. Add a Name and Description:
  2. Name: Give your Gem a clear, functional title (e.g., Email Polisher, Python Debugger, Lesson Planner).
  3. Description: Write a brief single-sentence summary of what it does so you can recognize it easily in your sidebar.
  1. Write the Instructions: Use a clear 4-part structure for best results. In the Instructions box, clearly outline how the Gem must behave:
  2. Role: Who is the Gem? (e.g., “You are a patient writing coach.”)
  3. Task: What is its primary job? (e.g., “Review draft articles for clarity and concise phrasing.”)
  4. Tone & Rules: How should it speak, and what should it avoid? (e.g., “Use simple language. Never use corporate jargon or buzzwords.”)
  5. Output Format: How should responses look? (e.g., “Provide 3 bullet-point suggestions followed by the revised paragraph.”)

(Optional: If you write a rough draft, you can click the Use Gemini to re-write instructions magic wand icon to automatically refine and structure it.)

  1. Attach Knowledge Files or Pick Tools: Optional.
  2. Knowledge: Under the Knowledge section, upload reference documents (PDFs, text guides, or Google Drive docs) if you want your Gem to refer to specific data or brand guidelines.
  3. Default Tool: If this Gem is focused on a specific tool (such as image generation or deep research), set it as the default.
  1. Preview and Save: Always test before saving. In the Preview panel on the right, send a test message to ensure the Gem responds in the desired format and tone. Tweak the instructions if needed, then click Save.

Your saved Gem will now appear in your left sidebar, ready to open anytime for consistent, tailored conversations without needing setup prompts.
